At the projects annual meeting, a workshop brought together members of the consortium to discuss and improve the Simple Social-Ecological System (sSES) approach as a key output of Marine SABRES. Organised by Kathrine Kopke, Julie Bremner, Frances Mynott, Mike Elliott, and Gemma Smith, the workshop aimed to update everyone on the progress of the refinement of the Simple SES guidance and to gather feedback from the group to guide the final stages of development. The session began with Kathrine Kopke introducing the goals of the day. This was followed by Gemma Smith, who explained how the SES models are being refined and what the next steps will be.
To encourage diverse perspectives, participants were grouped in a way that ensured a mix of specialisms and geographical regions of the consortium members. This helped ensure that insights were not limited to one area or expertise. In the first activity, participants were asked to share one concern and one positive aspect about the SES models. They wrote their thoughts on post-it notes and shared them with their group. This helped surface a variety of views, which will be used to inform the ongoing refinement process.
In the second activity, groups were asked two main questions: “What would ideal guidelines for the SES models look like?” and “How can we create these guidelines?” The discussions around these questions helped each group come up with statements outlining what is needed to make the sSES better and how to achieve this. The conversations touched on everything from how data should be used to how best to present the results.
To wrap up the session, participants used a Menti poll to rank the most important priorities for moving forward. The results of the poll, along with the feedback from the earlier activities, will guide the next steps in refining the SES models
This workshop was an important milestone in the development of the SES models. It provided a chance for project members to collaborate, share their insights, and work together on refining the models. The input gathered will play a key role in shaping the final version of the approach, ensuring it is practical, user-friendly, and backed by a wide range of expertise.
If you are interested in some of the outputs of the workshop; the Menti Meter Results are below. To see the impact of this workshop in the project outputs, the deliverable detailing the Final Simple SES approach using this feedback will be submitted February 2025 and on the Marine SABRES website shortly following this.
