On Saturday (7 June 2025) our Marine SABRES colleague Lorena Naranjo Almeida was in La Aldea de San Nicolás on behalf of the ULPGC BlueGreen Governance team participated in a guided walk that was delivered as part of World Oceans Day in the Village of San Nicolas. W The aim of the event is to raise awareness about the importance of conserving marine ecosystems, encourage participation in the protection of the local marine environment, promote knowledge of the natural and cultural heritage linked to the sea, and create a meeting place centered on the sea as an identity.
"There is an ancient language, deeper than words. It is the sound of the waves, the constant beat of the ocean, the one that connects us to our origins." - BlueGreen Governance
As part of this event, Lorena also moderated the Video-Forums colloquium after the viewing of the first eopisiodio of "HOPE! We are on time" by Javier Peña. This represented the first Video-Forum on the island of Gran Canaria, and served as a collective debate and reflection on the success story in Cabo Pulmo (Mexico). During the event participants shared reflections on the potential of how to replicate initiatives of this type in the Canary Islands, discussing in particular the limitations, barriers, and opportunities these initiatives can represent. The discussions were facilitated by a panel of experts which included colleagues from the Marine SABRES Project including Candy Cecilia Ruano and Dr. Inma Herrera, among others.
