Sandra Rybicki - HAFRO
We’ve been making waves in the Arctic Demonstration Area of the Marine SABRES project, focusing on the marine environments around the Faroe Islands, Greenland, and Iceland. Our aim? To build a practical and user-friendly Simple Socio-Ecological System (Simple SES) tool that empowers decision-makers and communities to support sustainable marine practices. Here’s what we’ve been up to!
Pelagic Fisheries in Focus 🎣
The Northeast Atlantic is home to vital pelagic stocks like mackerel, blue whiting, herring, and capelin. These fish aren’t just key to the ecosystem—they’re economic powerhouses, supporting industries and jobs across the Arctic. With climate change affecting their migration patterns and the interconnectedness of marine and economic systems, we’re addressing critical issues like:
International quota negotiations 🤝
Innovation in fisheries products 🐟
Shifts in species distribution 🌍
Strategies to reduce carbon emissions 🌱
Embracing circular economy practices 🔄
Safeguarding biodiversity 🦈
Stakeholder-Driven Insights 💬
To tackle these challenges, we’ve been gathering valuable feedback from stakeholders. Using interviews and surveys, we’ve started building Causal Loop Diagrams (CLDs). These diagrams act like a dynamic roadmap, visualizing how different factors influence each other within the socio-ecological system. CLDs help us see the big picture and adapt our approach based on real-world feedback, rather than relying on static solutions.
Workshop in Iceland 🇮🇸
Our journey hit an exciting milestone with a stakeholder workshop in Iceland! This event marked the beginning of the next feedback round on the CLD model. Using interactive tools like Mentimeter, we gathered real-time responses, diving deeper into questions about the Simple SES tool. This collaborative session helped us refine our understanding of stakeholder priorities and ensured that the tool reflects the needs of those living and working in these unique Arctic regions.
What’s Next? 🚀
We’re moving forward with the input gathered, continuing to engage stakeholders in the Faroe Islands, Greenland, and Iceland. Their feedback will be crucial in refining the Simple SES framework and guiding our efforts in marine biodiversity conservation and sustainable fisheries management.
Stay tuned as we keep charting this course together, building a resilient future for the Arctic’s coastal and marine sectors!
